Lisbon Coast & Vale do Tejo

Nearby the capital one finds many places worth a visit: Sintra, classified by UNESCO as World Heritage Site, the majestic monastery of Mafra, the cosmopolitan town of  Cascais, the Natural Park of Arrábida mountains, the pictorial Sesimbra, the city of Setúbal or the magnificent countryside farms of Azeitão.   In this area everyone finds a broadly choice of activities after its taste: beaches, water sports, golf courses,  open-air music festivals in summer.

The Atlantic coast, which extends to the northwest of Lisbon, surprises by its beauty:  times prevailing high rocky coast, times white sand beaches and lagoons.   Here, at Cabo Roca, one is at westernmost point of continental Europe.   In charming coastal places such as Peniche or Nazaré one can still watch colourful fishing boats at work.

Inland lay several monasteries classified by UNESCO as World Heritage sites, such as Alcobaça, Batalha or Tomar, witnesses of the important historical inheritance of Portugal.  Castles overlooking the cities of Leiria, Tomar, Óbidos or Santarém are reminders of Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, who conquered them from the Moors during the country foundation.
